About JR's Paws for a Cause
JR's Paws for a Cause began as Paws For a Cause, a dog-friendly 5K founded by Lauren Barbo, CVT, in her hometown of Natick, MA. Inspired by her 2015 mission trip with Project Samana, a 501(c)(3) veterinary outreach nonprofit serving the Samana peninsula in the Dominican Republic, Lauren set out to bring the local dog-loving community together for a greater purpose. Early events benefited Project Samana and Shultz's Guest House, a local rescue.
In 2016, just three days before the first 5K, Lauren's 4-year-old Labrador, Junior, was diagnosed with lymphoma. He lost his battle the following summer, and in 2018 the event was renamed JR's Paws For a Cause in his honor, with proceeds going to Project Samana and the National Canine Cancer Foundation. Since then, a portion of proceeds from all apparel and events has gone to Kyle's Legacy, which funds canine cancer research and helps families afford early-stage treatment, until there is a cure.
Today, JR's Paws For a Cause hosts dog-friendly events from Boston to Cape Cod year-round and sells clothing with meaning, bringing the animal-loving community together while making a lasting impact for animals everywhere.
